How Much Did That Save Cost?
Email This Post
Puck That Hit has decided to play statistician for a day and compiled what we consider a pretty neat stat: Cost per Save. This figure is a pretty good indicator of how valuable a goalie is to a team in terms of stopping power, as well as “bang for buck”… or “stop for buck”!
| Top 3 Goalies | Bottom 3 Goalies |
| $520 Jason LaBarbera (Kings) $594 Timothy Jr. Thomas (Bruins) $635 Dan Ellis (Predators) |
$4365 Marty Turco (Stars) $4876 Nikolai Khabibulin (Hawks) $6000 Jose Theodore (Avalanche) |
The more stops a goalie makes, the more the dollar amount will decrease, thus making the goalie a good investment by making a team get its money’s worth. A goalie that doesn’t make many stops (due to bad performance, injury, or 2nd goalie status) will not be such a good return on investment.
Needless to say, goalies with high salaries will need to perform that much better, and play that many more games not to find themselves at the bottom of the list. But that’s what they’re getting paid for, right?
Finally, this stat doesn’t take Wins and Loses into account. It’s just a way for fans to see how much return on investment they are getting for their guy between the pipes. Statistics were compiled until week ending January 31st, 2008. Goalies that have played less then 16 games were not considered.
